Strapping Machines

Strapping machines are used to secure cartons, bundles and palletised loads as part of a standard packing or despatch process. In warehouse environments where goods are packed and moved daily, consistent strapping is important for load stability and safe handling. A strapping machine applies controlled tension and a secure seal, helping ensure loads remain intact during storage and transport.

Strapping machines are commonly used with polypropylene (PP) or polyester (PET) strapping to strap cartons or pallet loads efficiently. Depending on the application, machines can be operated manually with powered tensioning and sealing, or fully integrated into automated packing lines, helping reduce packing time, improve consistency and support more efficient warehouse operations.

FAQs

Strapping machines are typically designed for polypropylene (PP) strap, which is lightweight, flexible and cost-effective. Most semi-automatic and automatic models run 12mm wide strap, but some use narrower widths depending on the machine design. It’s important to match both the width and core size of the strap to your specific machine to ensure your machine runs as it should.

While both use polypropylene (PP) strapping, the format is different. Strapping machines typically use 5mm, 9mm or 12mm strap wound onto 200mm cardboard cores. This format is designed to feed smoothly through semi-automatic or automatic machines.

Friction weld tools use hand strapping coils in 12mm, 16mm or 19mm widths, depending on the model. These coils are supplied on smaller plastic reels and are more portable, making them suitable for mobile or pallet strapping setups. They are often used with a dispenser trolley for easier handling.

Most polypropylene strap used with machines has a break strength between 130-180kg, which is suitable for standard cartons, bundles and pallets. Heavier loads or export packaging may require a higher-strength strap or a different strapping method altogether.

No. Machine strap is designed to be loaded directly into the machine itself, so a dispenser is not required. The reel sits inside the base or housing of the unit and feeds automatically during operation.

Dispenser trolleys are used with hand strapping coils for mobile use, such as with friction weld tools or manual tensioners.

Semi-automatic machines require the operator to place and feed the strap around the package - the machine then tensions, seals and cuts it. Automatic machines handle the full cycle with minimal input and are usually integrated into conveyor or packing lines.

Most semi-automatic and automatic strapping machines are designed for polypropylene (PP) strapping only.

PET strapping is typically used with friction weld strapping tools or specific heavy-duty machines designed for PET. Steel strapping is not suitable for standard strapping machines and requires dedicated steel strapping tools.

Choosing the Right Strapping Machine

The right strapping machine depends on how goods are packed, the volume of strapping required and the level of automation needed within your operation.

Semi-Automatic Strapping Machines

These machines are a common choice for warehouses and packing areas where cartons are strapped individually. The operator positions the strap around the load, and the machine applies tension, seals and cuts the strap automatically.

These machines are well suited to general carton strapping, offering a reliable balance of speed, consistency and control without the complexity of full automation. They are commonly used with polypropylene (PP) strapping and are ideal for day-to-day warehouse use.

Friction Weld Strapping Tools

These tools are used primarily for pallet strapping or irregular loads where a fixed machine is not practical. These handheld tools tension, weld and cut the strap directly around the load.

They are commonly used with polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET) strapping and are suitable for securing heavier or unstable loads. Friction weld tools are often chosen where flexibility is required, or where loads are strapped away from a dedicated packing station.

Fully Automatic Strapping Machines

These machines are designed for high-volume operations where speed and consistency are critical. These machines are typically integrated into conveyor systems or packing lines and apply strapping automatically as cartons pass through.

They are suited to environments which need to reduce manual handling and improve overall packing efficiency.

Strapping Types and Compatibility

Strapping machines are typically used with polypropylene (PP) machine strap or polyester (PET) strapping, depending on the application.

PP strapping is commonly used for cartons and lighter loads, while PET strapping is used for heavier or palletised loads where higher tension and strength are required.

Strap width and thickness must match the machine specification to ensure reliable tensioning and sealing.
